The Lake Victoria Peace and Sustainability Centre is based on Rusinga Island on Nam Lolwe, the source of the Nile. I visited with this network of organisations on the invitation of Solomon who I met during the Non Violent Communication training I attended last year.
The network is made up of about 30 organisations that work on different issues on the island including childrens’ safety, food security, beach maintenance, fishers’ associations, perceptions of disabilities, environmental management, youth services and so on. With a diversity of organisations already in operation on the small island, Solomon who founded the network thought it would be a good idea to bring them together under one umbrella so that they could share resources, and ‘go farther together’. The commitment of members of the network to supporting smaller organisations and helping them grow, as well as to teaching and learning new things from each other was impressive. They embodied the proverb: ‘if you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far, go together‘ and together they are going towards greater peace and sustainability on Rusinga Island.
